Politics, Playgroups and Prevarication

Wow, I did it again with the title. I can't help myself.

The pressure is on. Now that I have told (a few) people this exists I need to actually write in it now and then. Normally Mondays are playgroup days. Mommy gets to talk to other grown ups and Swift gets to play with (OK, alongside) his little buddies and buddettes. The best of plans as they say ... So, today I won't be doing much travel by car because all the major thoroughfares are blocked due to a huge political rally going on in the "Open Theater" or Khulla Manch (a much more fun name to say than "Open Theater"). This is actually good news for Nepal if a bit wearing on those of us who have to stay home today - a small price to pay for a little free speech action going on in the name of democracy. So the government has named a new election date, April 10, while the Maoists continue to extort, bear arms and generally harrass the populace. There was a cartoon in today's paper depicting the election commissioner reading off the election calendar including the date the poll would be called off. Incredibly cynical -- but who can blame them?

This is unrelated but give me a minute and you'll get where I am going. I am reading Julie/Julia by Julie Powell at the moment. Bill gave it to me last year when I was reading Julia Child's autobiography. The book is about a woman who embarks on a project; cooking all the recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Fine Art of French Cooking in a year. Now this doesn't sound too crazy to me but if I tried this I'd turn into a mammoth mamma in no time flat. So Julie is incredibly profane, but pretty dang funny - she wouldn't ever use the word 'dang' for instance. But reading about all this fine french food just highlights the culinary doldrums in our household. Kids are famous for having a fairly narrow repertoire in the healthy food category and mine are no exception. I have been trying to sneak in pureed veggies into their food. Deceptive? Yes, but I am desperate and not above this at all. The pureed cauliflower in the Mac and Cheese was a colossal failure - all three of them spit it out - it was a fairly hilarious scene: Mommy tries to act nonchalant as the first bites are taken hoping against hope that maybe she was successful in sneaking a few more nutrients into their little bodies. In turn, three small heads turn to her in horror - "this tastes funny", "I don't like", "splahhbt". So .... in defeat I will ice a cake this afternoon by request of numero uno daughter - in rainbow colors. Now that is something to do when you can't go anywhere while Democracy flexes its muscles.

Peace, Laurel

At least you are still trying with the veggies. I'm afraid anything green is received with distrust these days at my house. Congrats on your day!

First, love your photography and the images you capture. Absolutely beautiful.

Second, my mom got me Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Let's say all I've mastered is the French Onion Soup. I'd eat it everyday though, so not a waste.

Third, good for you for trying to sneak the healthy stuff in. I need to try that. How about you? Did you enjoy the "strange" taste?

Fourth, how is the local cuisine? I think my husband would be pretty close to heaven if we could eat out all the time there.

good for you about the veggies! I think if I tried that, my kids would sense it within seconds.

Try "Deceptively Delicious" by Jessica Seinfeld....there are some good recipes in it for sneaking in those veggies.

Happy SITS day to you. It's been fun and educational reading your blog.

Yep...the sneaky food trick was a good try:)

My parents used to make us take a little of everything at a meal. My sisters used to take the 'smallest' spoonful possible when it came to something they didn't like. It was pretty funny.

Good try with the veggies. I think Jessica Seinfeld has a cookbook out with very successful recipes that sneak in veggies. I've HEARD this but haven't actually tried it.

Love hearing about what's going on in Napal. I get my news and cultural learning from international blogs these days. :o)

how funny! we just found a recipe for ice cream that includes pureed carrots and cabbage, and it's amazing, you can't even taste it!

YUM! hehe

Isn't awful how creative we have to get sometimes as mommies. I chop up stuff to hide in the Spaghetti sauce.

Wow you are brave to try it. I guess they can always eat carrot cake, right???

here's an idea since children typically like fried crunchy food - coat veggies in batter and fry them.

Make blah cauliflowers into "french flowers" :) Just an idea...

In case you were wondering?... It doesn't get any better. Mine are 15 and 18 and if a restaurant menu doesn't include 'chicken strips, fingers or nuggets' then they'd rather stay home and bake up the frozen chicken strips, fingers or nuggets in the fridge.

My son is a bit more entrenched in his food selections than my daughter who will at least 'try' something new or only eat at the restaurants that also include 'Cheese Quesodilla's' with nothing but cheese on the tortilla.

I hope someday they have children who will ONLY eat gourmet!

Pureed cauliflower? You should be ashamed of yourself! I would/could smell that from a mile away.

Creativity at it's finest!

Have you heard of Deceptively Delicious? It's a cookbook that actually does the same thing you mention with the cauliflower but supposedly kid-tested recipes. Maybe worth a try.

And I really want to read Julie/Julia -- I think that is SUCH a cool concept!

So was it called off on schedule? I don't remember myself and too lazy to look it up.

love the secret veggies! we all need help with getting the greens in.

happy SITS day, your blog is amazing!

My kids can smell a veggie coming from 10 miles away as well. I haven't bothered buying that Jessica Seinfeld book because I don't want to waste my 20 bucks on two picky picky eaters!

You almost had them. I'm lucky I guess my kids love their veggies. I even get them to eat artichokes.

Happy SITS day!

Oh how wicked of you to sneak cauliflower in their mac-n-cheese. A very diabolical mommy you are. I would have spit it out too!

Congrats a day late on the SITS feature. You're blog is truly fascinating, while at the same time you cope with struggles as ordinary as the rest of us. Pureed cauliflower is quite a strategy, although it was a flop, you still get an A for effort.

I have been wanting to read this book - and now that the news has come out about Julia Child being a spy...it seems all the more alluring.

I have really enjoyed checking out your blog...and am definitely adding you to my reader...

Stopping by via SIT's. Congrats on your Saucy day!

I found you through SIITS.

I have done the hide the vegetable thing too, with similar results. Chocolate cake cooked with grated beetroot actually worked though!!

that is what we do almost to a t!

Ha ha...Great mom's think alike! I've just recently been pureeing veggies to sneak into foods (Deceptively Delicious)...and so far it's pretty much been a "no go" on almost everything I've made (a grand total of three meals) except the meatloaf! (MAN!) I'm still trying though!

Love the cake w/rainbow sprinkles idea...don't we add like avacado to that or something? ;D

That book sounds really interesting, I should pick it up :]
